Today we visited a sheep farm, with a brief stop at another waterfall that just
happened to be along the way, and then continued to a horse farm. We were
leaving our Selfoss base, traveling west and north, on the way to Akureyri.
There was a stop at a shopping center, and the produce section in grocery stores
seems relatively small.
In Iceland, sheep are generally allowed to roam freely over the summer and are
rounded up in mid-September. The Icelandic Horse is a breed developed in the
ninth and tenth centuries for Iceland’s harsh climate. To protect the breed,
Iceland outlaws importing horses.
En route, our trip leader, Margrét Rós Harðardóttir, told the story of Guðríður
Símonardóttir, captured
by Barbary Pirates in 1627 and ransomed years later.
