Lots of driving today to get from the central west coast to Akureyri in the
north, with a stop at a search and rescue station along the way for a discussion
of how they prepare for and conduct rescue missions. Despite being far north
(65°41'), Akureyri has a nicer climate than much of Iceland and has a botanical
garden. It was 63 ºF when we arrived, although a bit windy at times. Still, the
plants in the garden are mostly arctic or alpine and are selected for hardiness.
Our tour group visited the botanical garden and then walked through town. Most
of the traffic signals in Akureyri have a heart shape for the red light. (This
puts the town at odds with Iceland’s transport authority which says they are not
compliant to the rules.)
